Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Winterland 73 and Rhino and ...Speeding Arrow

hey folks
i so love this forum. here's one i was pondering, Speeding Arrow was shut down(gently i hope) just as Rhino was releasing Winterland 73.
It looks like a great set but the whole thing kinda grates me. I buy the studio cds ,the dvds ,a few shirts and such. So the support for the Boys(?) is still there that way, so when did the music fall before the corporate altar? Was that site REALLY digging into the bottom line that much??
Oh and before anybody says it I am not a cheap bastard thats not the point!!!

PEACE:Skippy

I think it is mainly about 'ownership' of the SBD's

Rhino 'owns' the SBD's and does not want uncontrolled distirbution is my take in it.

For the record, I am a cheap bastard!

;~)

there are hundreds of sweet sounding auds here, free, that noone can take from you. all the classics have been released already, what's there to complain about? if you need more boards they are certainly out there. the myth that there are these amazing shows in the vault noone has heard about, is just a myth, imho.

Oh I'm not complaining, I usually like the AUD's better than the SBD's anyway. I completely understand Rhino's position and think the Arrow did the right thing by complying in a timely manner.

I agree 110% about the AUD's, and feel super fortunate to have this sort of instant access etc.

But I'm still a cheap bastard, nothings gonna change that.

me too. nothing feels better than grabbing a good aud of an official release, then not needing to buy the official release. like this for example. http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-11-05.aud.clugston-alternate.3293.sbeok.shnf

Hey all

i appreciate your points and i have grown to love the auds more actually, as a matter of fact 91-09-04 is my current fav, you can hear folks singing along it's great. I guess i miss the ease with which we could access those as well. Not necessarily the SBDs. It would not have broken my heart to have the SBDs taken off Arrow but thats just me. Not cheap... just lazy.

Peace

The best thing about the Archive having to shut down SBD DL's?

Seeing all the snooty dyed in the wool SBD snobs appreciating and seeing the light on how great a well taped aud is.

"as a matter of fact 91-09-04 is my current fav"

What the hell is that? I'm not even gonna bother to retype it. Do you mean 9-4-91? Hey, dude, try typing 9-4-91... it's a LOT easier than that other stoopid way. Please take no offense... people've been labeling shows month-day-year like that since the beginning of recording shows... there ain't no need, in casual conversation, to type it any other way.

How could typing 9-4-91 as 91-09-04 be a mistake?

Year first is great for filing purposes.

But come on, man, when just casually talking about a show, I ain't ever gonna tell someone that I just listened to "78-04-14" ... would you? If so then you're in the minority. There will be no Year First revolution. Again -- for filing purposes, that's cool, bro! I do it. But not when just mentioning, requesting, reviewing, recommending, etc.

It may come as something of a surprise to you to learn that the whole world doesn’t follow the American month-day-year dating convention – we Brits, for example, prefer the more logical day-month-year. Since most of my fellow forumites are American I try to do them the courtesy of referencing shows by the US dating format, but Skippy’s usage of the archival year-month-day format is one way of avoiding ambiguity for everyone in date references. You might wish to accept that he’s simply being considerate and cut him some slack.

as does my czech wife, which often results in some confusion in our home (does 5-4 mean May 4th or April 5th?) - but I cut her slack because she's a foreigner (and I can always call INS on her ass).

wow a tempest in a teapot I would say. Thanks for your kind words robthewordsmith, thats kinda my idea, if life had taken another turn i would have been a librarian so that way appeals to the archivist in me!!lol.
Anyway how about this bro?? Give 9-4-91 a go, your spirit will thank you.
